haha seriously. i messaged himyesterday with no response. im just going to drill and tap a steering arm onto the strut.


good progress on mine. all i have left is to mount engine, plumb fuel lines and mount avionics.

mounted the nose retract on mine. did a test of the strength of the support tray by pulling the strut forward and with minimal pressure the whole tray would easily flex.

going to use some aircraft grade ply and run it from the firewall to the front of that tray to handle some of the load. not much room to work because have to incorporate the throttle pushrod and the steering servo. should do the trick. also removed a lot of the cheap wood. need to trim the support i made to fit.

you can also see where i had to trim the front of the tray to clear my mufflers. mods mods mods!

also the nose gear doors will have to be on a y because the retract controller only has three inputs for door servos. either that or the main gear door servos on a y. i'm thinking i may just leave the nose doors off.

i was worried about the same initially but i've got a plan for reinforcing it that i think will be plenty strong. going to get that finished up today or tomorrow.

Can't believe that gator have not done a build and flying report on them. Most odd that.

I saw the big Legend RC L-19 Bird dog, 156" span. Lovely model. No one in my country is selling them and I really have enough planes waiting for me to attack them anyway but it is a nice thought. ;-)

i may add some carbon fiber if i can work it out. didn't get anything done today.

never heard back from stewart or mike. i don't know what it is with these giant scale planes. none of the manufacturers or distributors do any build or marketing videos. very odd when trying to sell multi thousand dollar toys. the foam planes have way better marketing.

it's a shame you can't get the L-19. that's a really nice plane!

yeah and the market they are in is towards the top end of the hobby, not up with a CARF or the kero burners but close to it. Maybe they need to get a marketing guru on board or hire Peter Goldsmith, he can give them advice on many levels.

I've liked the look of the L-19 since I first saw one. Have a modelling mate who flew them in Vietnam, said he got sicvk of the cong taking pot shots at him so he carried a M16 and a few spare mags and would fly with window open and blat away at them to keep their heads down ! I could just see him doing that too. He flew Mirage III, F-86 avon engine version, F4E as well. Refused to go onto Pigs (F111), I'm not flying a bloody bomber!!

Anyway we digress.

got some work done yesterday after not getting at it for a while. buddy of mine drilled and tapped the nose gear so the steering situation is figured out.

also reinforced the firewall with aircraft grade ply and made 2 nose gear supports. it's not too pretty but it should be way stronger than stock. that wood is flimsy.

no problem. it's been quite a bit of work up front.

next up is the fuel tank. the stock tank looks sketchy and seems to hold around 40oz. i'm looking into installing two tanks, one on each side of the fuse. my dle-130 is thirsty and i have a heavy thumb so i want to be able to hold 50oz.

That will work with the steering. As a thought I'd be inclined to install another arm under the first and have the captive ball link between them. That single arm will not live that long.

interesting i've never seen a dual arm setup. i can't quite visualize it you wouldn't happen to have any pictures of one would you?

The tiller arm on the strut, not the servo arm. Drill and tap another hole the one you have so you have 2 tiller arms on the struts, the captive ball link sits between them.

You may need to put the arm that is attached to servo arm to the other side so the engle is not as pronounced.

change of plans with the engine... UMS 180 5 Cylinder radial. I received a series of photos showing both the 180 and 210 mounted. Its doable. Engine mount will need a bit of modifying and use of standoffs.
Advice was that the 210 has 'crazy power'. The 180 will allow use of a nice big 3 blade prop and will keep RPM down. Sadly the Biella 32x15 scale T-28 prop is just too large for this engine but will see what Vario Prop can offer.

that's a good engine choice on the ums. i was sent the same pics of the ums 180 in the airplane as well. seems to fit perfectly. now i want to go back to my original plane of putting a radial in mine haha.

was reading back through the posts and someone said the dle111 doesn't need any standoffs. my dle-130 needs almost 40mm standoffs i must be doing something wrong lol

Re: the DLE-111, that was with one of the first versions of the T-28 which has the engine box forward with the leading edge of the nose gear mount, in fact it is all part of same structure.
The version of T28 you and I have is the 2nd type and it has the firewall cut right back and with nose gear mount protruding forward. Its an odd change and can only think it was done to cater for other engine choices.
I will need to use standoffs for the 180 and trim some of the front of the nose gear mount to allow clearance for collector ring and reduce how far the prop hub pokes out past cowl lip.

Prop choice is my next concern. Ramoser Varioprop can do one and I did get a quote from them however I am unclear how it mounts given the UMS uses a 6 bolt prop hub mounting system. Vario probs generally uses a single bolt through the middle. Waiting to hear back from them.

ok that makes sense bc when i was talking about the radial earlier in the thread i was adamantly informed it wouldn't work. guess we were all correct haha.

im going to fly mine with the 130. then may go ums 180 or 210 in the spring. just need to get the fuel system installed and final engine install and im ready to maiden. hopefully in the next couple weeks.
